Mediation
Mediation is an effective way of resolving employment issues amicably and without litigation. It involves using facilitated discussions to solve disputes, improve working relationships and enhance the long-term productivity of a business. Usually a heads of agreement is reached which can pave the boundaries for the working relationship moving forward. This can then be used should either party act outside of the agreement.
Conflict occurs in even the most functional workplace, from minor gripes to more serious issues including inappropriate behaviour, industrial matters and personality conflicts. If not handled properly, these disputes can escalate, leading to deteriorating relationships, productivity and workplace culture, and even litigation.
Mediation is most successful when conducted by external facilitators as this increases participants’ comfort, leading to a more open, honest discussion of issues without fear of repercussions. Qualified workplace relations specialists are trained in guiding people towards objective, impartial resolutions acceptable to all parties.
In some instances, mediation can save the time, expense and damage of a full investigation.
